THE BEST KILIMANJARO CLIMBING ROUTE FOR YOU

KILIMANJARO CLIMBING ROUTE

When it comes to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, there are seven different routes you can choose from. Each route offers its own unique features in terms of length, cost, scenery, difficulty level, and success rates. Selecting the right route for your Kilimanjaro climb is a crucial decision, and it depends on several factors. Let's explore the routes and the factors to consider before making your choice.

Factors to Consider Before Choosing Your Mount Kilimanjaro Route:

  • Time of the Year: The weather and climbing conditions vary throughout the year, so it's important to choose a route that aligns with the season you plan to climb.

  •  Budget Available: Different routes have varying costs due to factors such as accommodation options and transport requirements. Consider your budget when making your decision

  •  Previous Hiking/Trekking Experience: Your level of experience in hiking and trekking can influence your choice of route. Some routes are more suitable for beginners, while others are more challenging and require prior experience.

  •  Fitness Level: Kilimanjaro is a demanding climb, so your fitness level should be taken into account. Some routes have steeper paths and longer hiking days, requiring better physical preparation.

  •  Personal Preference: Your personal preferences, such as the type of scenery you prefer or the level of solitude you seek during the climb, can also play a role in choosing the right route for you.

Now let's take a closer look at the different routes available:

1. The Marangu Route (Coca-Cola Route):  - Considered relatively easy with a gradual slope and hut accommodation.  - Often underestimated, resulting in a significant number of trekkers not reaching the summit.  - Recommended to add an extra day for better acclimatization.

2. The Machame Route (Whiskey Route):  - More challenging than the Marangu Route but has a higher success rate.  - Features steep sections, valleys, and ridges, requiring a minimum of 6 days for the climb.  - Offers spectacular scenery and is popular among trekkers.

3. The Rongai Route:  - Considered the easiest route with higher success rates.  - Provides a wilderness experience with fewer crowds and great scenery.  - Requires additional transport costs to the hiking trail.

4. The Shira Route:  - Approaches Kilimanjaro from the west and joins the Machame Route.  - Requires a minimum of 6 days and additional transport to the trail.  - Offers spectacular scenery but lacks popularity compared to other routes.

5. The Lemosho Route:  - Considered the most scenic route to Kilimanjaro's summit.  - Approaches from the west and joins the Machame Route.  - Requires a minimum of 7 or 8 days and offers a superb wilderness experience.

6. The Umbwe Route:  - Known as the toughest route, it is steep, direct, and demanding.  - Requires a minimum of 6 days and is recommended for experienced trekkers.

7. The Northern Circuit Route:  - The longest route offering panoramic views of the mountain.  - Provides proper acclimatization and less crowded trails.  - Requires 9 or 10 days for the climb.

It's important to note that there are other routes available, such as the Mweka Route (used for descending), the Kilema Mountain Biking Route, and the Western Breach Route (considered risky and unsafe). Consider the information provided about each route, taking into account your preferences, experience, and budget, to choose the Kilimanjaro climbing route that suits you best.
