Plan Your 6-Day Calving Season Safari
Day-by-Day Ndutu & Serengeti Itinerary
Explore Tanzania on a 6-day wildebeest calving season safari, from Tarangire National Park to Ndutu, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Enjoy guided game drives, migrating herds and opportunities to see newborn wildebeest.
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and meet your private safari guide for your transfer to Arusha. After check-in, enjoy a relaxed evening at your accommodation and prepare for the safari ahead. Depending on your arrival time, you can rest at the lodge or explore a little of Arusha before your safari begins the following morning.

Day 2: Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park for your first game drive. Known for its large elephant herds, baobab trees and varied landscapes, Tarangire offers an excellent introduction to northern Tanzania's wildlife.
Spend the day exploring the park with your private guide, looking for elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, antelopes and predators. Enjoy a picnic lunch during the game drive before continuing toward your accommodation.
Day 3: Southern Serengeti and Ndutu
After breakfast, continue toward the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu area, the main focus of your calving-season safari.
As you enter the region, begin your game drive across the open plains, where large concentrations of wildebeest and zebra may be found during the season. The abundance of newborn calves also attracts predators, creating opportunities to observe lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other wildlife.

Day 4: Full-Day Game Drive in Ndutu
Today is dedicated to exploring Ndutu and the surrounding Southern Serengeti plains. With a full day available, your guide can spend more time following wildlife activity and selecting areas based on current sightings and conditions. You may encounter wildebeest with newborn calves, zebra, gazelles and a variety of predators.
An optional hot-air balloon safari can also be arranged, depending on availability.
Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush before continuing your afternoon game drive and returning to camp.
Day 5: Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, leave the Ndutu area and continue into the wider Serengeti ecosystem, enjoying game viewing along the way.
Spend the day exploring the Serengeti with your private guide. The landscape provides opportunities to see lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, cheetahs and other wildlife.

Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater and Departure
After breakfast, continue toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the crater for a game drive, subject to your departure schedule.
The crater offers a different wildlife environment, with opportunities to see lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and, with luck, black rhino.
After the crater experience, ascend and continue toward your departure point. Depending on your flight schedule, you can be transferred to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport. Your safari can also be extended with additional nights in Tanzania or a Zanzibar beach holiday.

Weather and What to Pack
The calving season from January to March brings warm, pleasant daytime temperatures (often reaching 25°C to 30°C) alongside lush, green landscapes. Because weather patterns vary from year to year, you may experience brief afternoon showers or passing thunderstorms following dry mornings.
-
Clothing: Pack lightweight, breathable layers for warm daytime game drives, along with a warm fleece or jacket for cool early-morning departures. Neutral colors are best for the bush.
-
Rain Protection: A light, packable rain jacket or poncho is essential for sudden downpours.
-
Sun Protection: Bring a wide-brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and sunglasses to counter the strong equatorial sun on the open plains.
-
Camera Dust Protection: Because Ndutu features dry, volcanic dust trails during vehicle movement, bring a specialized dust cover, lens cloths, and a soft brush to keep your photography gear protected.
Tanzania Calving Season Safari FAQs
When is the best time to see the calving season in Tanzania?
January to March, with February generally being the peak calving period when thousands of wildebeest calves are born daily across the short-grass plains
Where is the best place to see the calving season?
Ndutu and the southern Serengeti are the primary calving grounds, offering the highest concentration of migratory herds, newborn calves, and intense predator action.
How many days do I need for a calving season safari?
We recommend at least 4 to 6 days, allowing dedicated time to explore both Ndutu and the surrounding southern Serengeti without rushing game drives.
Will I see predators during the calving season?
Yes. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, and spotted hyenas congregate in high numbers around the birth sites, making this one of the best times of year for dramatic predator-prey encounters.
Is the calving season part of the Great Migration?
Yes. The calving season is one of the most critical stages of the annual Great Migration cycle, marking the birth of the next generation of wildebeest.
What is the difference between early, peak, and late calving season?
January marks the arrival of the herds and early births; February is the peak birthing window; and March features active young calves as the herds begin moving north
Is off-road driving allowed during the calving season?
Yes, but only in designated zones of the Ndutu sector (Ngorongoro Conservation Area) with licensed local guides. Off-road driving remains strictly prohibited inside Serengeti National Park proper.
Where will I stay during the calving season?
Accommodations range from seasonal mobile tented camps to top-end properties offering fine dining, Wi-Fi, and luxurious rooms with private decks or verandas situated in scenic locations across Serengeti, Karatu, and Ngorongoro.
Should I fly or drive to the calving grounds?
Flying directly into Ndutu Airstrip from Arusha or Zanzibar saves 6+ hours of rough road transit. Alternatively, driving as part of a northern circuit itinerary allows you to easily incorporate Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater.
Can I combine a calving season safari with a Zanzibar beach trip
es. You can easily arrange a Safari From Zanzibar with direct flight connections between the coastal island and the southern Serengeti calving grounds
Can I combine the calving season with Mount Kilimanjaro?
Yes. Mount Kilimanjaro treks can be scheduled before or after your safari, creating a complete mountain-to-plains Tanzanian adventure
How far in advance should I book a calving season safari?
We advise booking 6 to 12 months in advance, as high-demand February travel dates and premier Ndutu lodges fill up quickly.
What is the weather and terrain like during the calving season?
January to March brings warm temperatures, green landscapes, and occasional short rains. Tracks can become muddy, so four-wheel-drive vehicles, light layers, and rain protection are essential.
How does the calving season differ from the river crossing season?
The calving season (January to March) focuses on new life and big cat activity on the southern plains, whereas the iconic river crossings take place in the northern Serengeti from July to October. View our dedicated Mara River crossing safaris guide to learn more about northern migration routes
